Triple
O's by White Spot - Our Start
White Spot¡¦s founder,
Nat Bailey, began his career selling peanuts in Vancouver¡¦s original
sports arenas in the 1920s. Known as ¡§Mr. Baseball¡¨, this young
British Columbia entrepreneur developed an innovative food service
idea perfectly matched to Vanocuver¡¦s blossoming romance with
the automobile. He¡¦d offer just a few menu items, all prepared
fresh to his exacting standards, then he¡¦d serve his guests with
a smile, right in the comfort of their cars.
Nat cleared an undeveloped
lot and in 1928 opened Canada¡¦s first drive-in restaurant. The
small wooden cabin with a white spot on its roof became an overnight
sensation.
The desire to give
his guests something unique and more than they expected became
Nat¡¦s obsession. In 1937, after purchasing land adjacent to the
drive-in, Nat replaced the cabin with the White Spot Restaurant
and Drive-In, and in 1938, added the White Spot Dining Room. The
Dining Room was an instant success, offering an affordable destination
for great food, comfortable surroundings and warm service.
More restaurants followed
and in each, Nat was committed to serving the freshest quality
food. For years, to ensure supply and consistency, Nat operated
a central kitchen or commissary called Granville House, as well
as owning his own chicken farms.
Chicken has long been
a signature White Spot item but undoubtedly, the best known item
is the legendary hamburger. The best quality beef, a unique sauce
knows as ¡§Triple O¡¨ and White Spot¡¦s signature French fries make
for a burger platter that is truly addictive. Legend has it the
name ¡§Triple O¡¨originated from carhop shorthand. X meant hold
the sauce, O meant extra dn triple Os meant plenty of sauce. Many
a traveler has demanded to be taken straight to the nearest White
Spot from the airport to get their ¡§Triple O fix¡¨!
Today, the legendary
burger, rated one of the 125 best things about Canada in a Globe
and Mail newspaper poll, remains. Currently, in addition to its
full service restaurants, White Spot operates a quick service
concept called Triple O¡¦s. Named after the legendary burger, Triple
O¡¦s locations boast a subtly retro decor and feature a limited
selection of White Spot items, such as burgers, fries and milkshakes
served to meet the speed of today¡¦s busy lifestyle. Now ¡V at last
¡V this concept has come to Hong Kong.
