Sheriff Michael Carona

Michael Carona was elected in 1998 as the eleventh sheriff in the history of Orange County. The Orange County Sheriff's Department is the third largest sheriff's department in the state of California and the fifth largest department in the nation. He has earned the respect of the three thousand seven hundred men and women within his department and has established himself as one of law enforcement's most powerful leaders. Sheriff Carona made national news this past summer when following the abduction and murder of five year old Samantha Runnion, Sheriff Carona vowed to bring the killer to justice and five days later, with the help of his department, arrested the prime suspect. Sheriff Carona is a strong advocate for issues relating to young people and serves on the blue ribbon campaign to prevent child abuse. He was recently appointed by Governor Davis as the Chairman of the California Counsel on criminal justice.
